Italy: Production decrease expected for red orange in 2012-13 campaign

After the latest report released by Freshfel-SHAFFE on 2012 citrus production and export in the northern hemisphere (see previous FreshPlaza news), Oranfrizer marketing director Salvo Laudani speaks about the situation in Sicily.

"Due to the bad weather last Spring, we see a dramatic decrease in blood orange production," he says. "A 35-40% decrease is expected in production for blood oranges, a 10% reduction for clementines and a 10% increase for tangerines." A 10-15% reduction for orange production and a -10% for lemons are also expected.

As for blood oranges, the main fall is recorded for late varieties, destined to both fresh market and processing industry.

"In average, sizes should be bigger than last year. On the other hand, the lack of rain could affect the right growth of fruit."

"Market demand is now stable and grower prices will be higher. Unfortunately it will be difficult for growers to compensate such significant loss in volume" Laudani concludes.
