"High demand for iceberg lettuce"

Netherlands: Spanish vegetable season underway

The Spanish vegetable season has commenced and is gradually picking up. "The overlap of the transition from the domestic to the foreign season is always a difficult period," shares a trader. "The Spanish season is now starting gradually. Not much is coming from the south as long as Dutch and Belgian products are still on the market. The presence of domestic goods has an influence on the prices. The quality is always a bit disappointing at the end of the season."

"The prices are pretty low at the moment, but I expect them to improve in the coming weeks. Everyone is starting to make the switch. The product from Spain is good even though you can tell that a few of the products were affected by the rain. For example, there is now good demand for iceberg lettuce."

"The prices for iceberg lettuce are currently around 10/11 Euro. This is because there is not very much on the market. In addition we have been able to see that bell pepper prices are picking up. Red bell peppers are receiving 7.50 Euro which is nice. Yellow is around 5.50 and green is almost 6 Euro. The aubergine prices are still pretty low, between 4.50 and 5 Euro. Courgettes are not doing too badly with 5.50 to 6 Euro."
