Francis van Overstaeten, De Roeck:

"Consumer now prefers clementines to apples"

Plenty of Spanish Clementines are on the market at the moment. "Sales are definitely not bad," Francis van Overstraeten of De Roeck explains. "At the moment there is a good demand and Clementines are just about our main trade. These are being sold under our brand Stephanie, Drie Vrouwen and Sucre. Prices are normal for the time of the year and vary from 8 to 12 Euro per 10 kg. depending on size, variety and quality."

According to Francis the quality of the citrus is good, but they cannot be kept too long. "The last few weeks it has been very rainy in Spain and as a result the durability is shorter. Oranges are now still a little sour and rather light of colour. That season starts in the middle or at the end of December, only then do the oranges have full taste. Hopefully the weather in Spain will improve during the coming period. Then I expect a good citrus season."

The trader says that apples are expensive at the moment. "In all of Europe there is a shortage and the smaller production is the cause of higher prices. We mainly have French apples in the assortment, but sales are somewhat smaller. It is noticeable that consumers are becoming more cost-conscious. I think that they would rather buy a clementine now than an apple."
