Argentina: Frost will cause 30% drop in citrus crop in 2013

Over 600 Argentinian citrus farmers are in trouble because of the heavy frost that damaged crops in the past few months. Recovery of the sector is not expected until 2014.

Last Thursday the government announced it will back the industry with funds, but even with the support growers state that 2013 will see a 30% drop in output. “We cannot expect any real recovery until 2014, if conditions do not worsen,” citrus grower Miguel Rosbaco told officials of the Federación de Cooperativas de Corrientes (Fedecoop). Other growers confirmed that expectations for the following year will not be met.

“There are two problems,” Rosbaco explained. “First, the damaged crop. Second, the growers who have to live off the land, and from the export of citrus.”
