Germany: Plum and cherry acreage down

Average plum prices in Germany in week 41 were markedly higher than in preceding years. The Hauszwetschge variety fetched 70 cents in 2009, and 1.54 Euro in 2012. The Presenta was 66 cents in 2009 and 2.31 in 2012. The President went from 62 cents to 1.70, and the Top from 59 cents to 1.05 Euro.

The acreage for plums is down this year. In 2011 is was 4,545 ha, in 2012 this is 3,864 ha. Baden-Württemberg still has the largest designated acreage, 1,508 hectares. The acres devoted to cherries also decreased: from 5,338 ha in 2011 to 5,181 ha in 2012.



In week 41 the domestic market share of German plums was almost 40%. In addition there were Italian, Turkish, Romanian and Spanish plums available, albeit in a lower price range.
