“Italian table grapes in privileged position”

The market for seedless grapes is still increasing. Grapes coming from Italy however, have their seeds firmly lodged inside. Then why import them? “Because they are the best-tasting grapes on the planet,” says Luciën de Wit of Fresh Produce company PeDe. According to him, no seedless variety can compete with the Italian import. “Italy really has a privileged position when it comes to grapes.”

The Italian grape season at PeDe starts in May with the Victoria and the Black Magic, both coming from Sicily. “The quality of those grapes was really good this year.” Mid July the grapes from mainland Puglia arrive, followed by the Italia, Red Globe and the seedless varieties Sugraone and Crimson.

So far, the season has been a good one. “We always do a little better when the summer fruit has left the markets,” says Luciën, “and the grape re-enters. I think demands will go up again in the coming months.”
