Organic a growing business at Coöbra

Belgium: “These days organic is affordable for everyone”

At the moment, Coöbra is the only Auction in Belgium able to deliver a large share of organic produce. In charge of the department are Bernard Craeye and Rony Jacobs. “Compared to 15 years ago a lot has changed on the organic market,” they say. “Organic products didn’t look so good then, but now you can hardly tell the difference. The quality is about the same. We use the assortment to target supermarkets.”

Coöbra’s organic share is about 7% at the moment. “In the past years we went from a dozen to 65 growers,” says Bernard. “A number that is likely to go up even further. We see many growers who change from conventional to organic, a process that usually takes up to 3 years.”

“Another thing that changed over the years is the price. Prices went down considerably since the beginning. Organic is still slightly more expensive of course, because the production process is so much more labour-intensive. But, these days, organic is affordable for everyone.”
