Considering the growth of organic banana exports in the last three years and the increase in production in the valley of Piura, Diego Balarezo Camminati, fruit program manager of the regional Andes office (consultant company specialized in handling and export of agricultural products, with over three years of work in the area), said the crop shipments would grow by no less than 35%, in the next five years from the Region.
According to the executive, the increase would be sustained, due to increased banana plantations in new areas of northern region, also supported by increased crop demand, mainly in Europe; which in his opinion, grow at around 20% per year.
Also, he stated that international prices for organic bananas now reached considerable stability (USD 0.66 per kilo on average per year), so a substantial change in the seasons to come is not expected.
It is worth pointing out that the consultant company Andes, also benefit from the program Competitive Agricultural Technology (Techno Links), in cooperation with MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates) and the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank (MIF), in order to benefit various associations of small organic banana farmers from Piura, to improve their access to new technologies, with a nonrefundable aid between USD 30,000 and USD 60,000.
Finally, he highlighted the increase in companies marketing the crop, which has exceeded 50, "it has improved supply, the interest of producers to learn best agronomic management practices and increased skilled labor in no less than 1.8% on average per year."
