Lucia Puttrich, German minister of Consumer Interests in Hesse, is advocating a clear tag of origin on frozen food labels. “I want to know where every tomato I buy comes from,” he stated last week. “Consumers have a right to know.”
At the moment, EU regulations demand the label only mentions the grower, the ingredients and the expiration date. In contrast to fresh produce, frozen foods do not need to mention country of origin. To further streamline the trade in frozen foods, the origin of the food needs to be made transparent.
