There are many different types of fruit grown in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Apples are still the most important species, reports the German website Proplanta.de. Data from the State Statistical Office show that in 2012 in Baden-Wurttemberg, apple trees occupied an area of 10,172 hectare. That is more than one third of the total fruit tree acreage of 14,820 hectare. The area used for the production of apples has increased with 521 hectare in the last five years. In contrast, the pear acreage decreased from 37 hectare down to 668 hectare.
Cherries are also an important stone fruit species in the south west of Germany. They are grown in Baden-Württemberg on 2,076 hectare (+4.3 percent). The increase in acreage in recent years is mainly due to the increased demand on the fresh market. The demand for cherries meant for distilleries and industrial processing has declined.
