Peter Fes, Best of Four:

"Netherland: "Spanish cucumbers on the way again"

The end of the cultivation for the Dutch cucumber growers is close again. Peter Fes of growers association Best of Four explains that the Spanish cucumbers are again available in large quantities. "The game is over again. We will now have to wait till the large buyers have completely changed to Spanish cucumbers."

Peter expects that the last cucumbers, depending on the weather, will be cut from the plant in three weeks time. "At the moment the 40's yield about 28-30 cents, the 35's 22 cents and the 30's 16 cents. All in all not too bad, taking into consideration that Spanish cucumbers are plentyful on the market. The Spanish trade is of reasonably good quality, but I am under the impression that this year started a little later than previous years."

Looking back at the season Peter says, that this season was different from grower to grower. This year there were a lot of fluctuations on the market. It really made a big difference per grower in which weeks cucumbers were picked."

For the coming year changes at Best of Four are not too big. "There is a number of growers, who left us, but an area of about the same size has joined us," Peter concludes.
