Peruvian fresh fruit exports growing between January and August

The Ministry of Agriculture (Minag) informed that Peruvian fresh fruit exports reached a value of 580.8 million dollars between January and August 2012, surpassing last year's figures (538.3 million) by 7.9%.

According to Minag's Office of Economic and Statistical Studies (OEEE), the fruits registering an increase in their export value were: mandarins (+34.8%), Cavendish Valery bananas (+30.4%), tangelos (+26.8%) and fresh grapes (+23.7%).

However, fresh fruit export volumes, which during the period at hand reached 416,200 tonnes, saw a 0.2% reduction (-898 tonnes) compared to 2011.

The fewer volumes sold of fresh mango (-35.7%) and frozen mango (-9%) had the biggest impact on the overall decrease.

The reason for this is the 61.4% fall in mango production between January and August this year, as the flowering and fruiting processes were affected by unseasonal weather in Piura and Lambayeque.

Of the total value of agricultural exports recorded between January and August 2012 (2,614.3 million dollars), Peruvian fresh fruit represents 22.2%, which is 2% higher than last year.

The main destinations for Peruvian fruit are the Netherlands, the United States, Spain, Germany and Belgium.
