US: Wisconsin tops organic acreage, California organic sales

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2011 Certified Organic Production Survey, Wisconsin ranks first in the nation in acreage of certified organic field crops. In terms of certified organic sales, California ranks first.

The survey, which was released last week, reported that Wisconsin had more than 110,000 acres harvested of organic field crops. With more than 97,000 acres, New York ranked second, and California, with more than 91,000 acres, came in third.

Although ranking third in organic field crop acreage, California had the most organic certified sales in 2011. With $1.4 billion in sales, California was responsible for nearly 40 percent of the nation's total sales of $3.5 billion. With nearly $300 million in sales, Washington came in second, and Oregon was third with more than $233 million in sales.
