Peru: Dehydrated foods may have better acceptance in Arab countries

The president of the Exporters Association (ADEX), Juan Varilias, said dehydrated foods are products that would be most welcomed in Arab countries, because the habit of consuming canned foods is very entrenched in that market.

He noted that peppers, grapes, mangoes and food from the Mediterranean chain could be part of the basic food basket in the Arabic market, if subjected to dehydration techniques.

"It would be better if the products arrive as they're used to eating them. Although Arab countries have conservation technologies, dehydrated products because of the climate and storage, are most welcomed," he stated.

He recalled that Peruvian cuisine and neighbouring countries share common elements that were introduced to Peru by the Spanish during the colonial times.

He pointed out that currently food shipments like fruits and vegetables to the Arab countries are being sent, although trade is still smaller and shows great growth potential.

Finally, he said that the objective of increasing Peruvian shipments to that market, demands improvement in competitiveness throughout infrastructure, policies for the transportation sectors, economy, agriculture and business guilds.
