Belgium Hoogstraten’s Baby kiwi finds its way to a larger audience

Last month Kris Peeters, Minister-President of Flanders, the northern region of Belgium, launched the official harvest of the industry’s darling: the baby kiwi. The small kiwi is doing good business at retailers like Spar and Colruyt. Due to a 40-ton harvest and new handy packaging, the bite-sized product is increasingly finding its way to a large audience.

To promote the bay kiwi as a healthy snack, the fruit has been distributed in handy ‘shakers’. These are easy to bring, and protect the fruits against bruising. 


Perfect as ingredient

The baby kiwi can also be used as an added ingredient for desserts, sweet as well as savoury. It works great with strawberries and whipped cream, but equally well with beef or fish. 



“These qualities make the fruit perfect in several dishes,” says chef Viki Geunes from restaurant ‘t Zilte in Antwerp. 

As everyday food

It doesn’t have to be exotic however. The baby kiwi can perk up any daily meal. TV chefs like Pascale Naessens and Claudia Allemeersch have already demonstrated the fruit’s versatility in several interesting recipes.
