Switzerland: Fewer onions in storage

The storing of onions in Switzerland is nearing its end. It has been estimated that the storage amounts will reach 21,201 tonnes. That is almost 5,000 tonnes less than in the especially good harvest year of 2011.
Despite the smaller harvest, it is still expected to be a good market supply, shares the 'Swiss Centre for Horticulture and Specialty Crops' (SZG). The quality of the onions is also good. The growing area of the stored onions is smaller at 60 hectares in comparison to last year, which corresponds with the decrease of 12%. According to the SZG, this is chiefly due to the fact that more onions were sold on the fresh market last year. The average harvest yield this year in Switzerland was at 494 kg per acre. Last year it was 533 kg per acre.
