Netherlands: “Prospects good for Dutch potatoes”

Demand for Dutch potatoes is high at the moment. According to Jaap Kodde of potato wholesaler Flevostar Dronten, the situation is unprecedented. “Both Ireland and the UK have had a lot of rain, and demand is skyrocketing. Due to Spring weather, crop is pretty meagre for the British, and the quality of their potatoes isn’t great either, but things are good all around. North Africa is buying, Brazil is taking in small amounts, even Russia is starting to stock its shelves. Eastern Europe isn’t buying yet, but they will.”

Potato prices fluctuate between 15 and 25 Euro. “The only bumps in the road are the Dutch themselves,” says Kodde. “Dutch buyers have difficulties getting used to these prices. They find it hard to accept that foreign demand contributes to the asking price. But all-in-all, prospects are good for Dutch potatoes.”
