Jiangnan market: Chilean cherries arrive by sea

On the morning of December 13, a container of Chilean cherries arrived in China as part of the maiden voyage of the Santa Teresa. Sales were good at first but a second shipment of 25 containers of Chilean cherries arrived on the afternoon of the same day and the market reacted with a steep price drop and slowed sales. Not even a third of the fruits were sold. The cherry varieties were mainly Royal Dawn and Santina. XL goes for 300 RMB, J-rank has a price of 350 RMB and JJ-rank fetches a good 440 RMB. The quality of the Santina cherries was only average, with many fruits showing a blemished skin. The Royal Dawn cherries sold really well, selling out right away when the container was opened.

Two pallets of New Zealand cherries also arrived in Canton with a one-way plane ticket. They are of regular quality and sell swiftly on the market as they go for 470 RMB. On December 15, 10 new containers of cherries arrive by sea with 9 containers still remaining from before. Judging from the current market reaction, the quality of the cherries coming from the Santa Teresa were only of mediocre quality. The sales climate is bad and the price keeps going down. Second and third-ranked wholesale markets also sell the cherries at low speed and the pricing is chaotic as they are sold for 200 RMB to 400 RMB depending on the district. On the evening of December 15, more than a 100 containers had already been brought back to the harbour, with a vast majority still having the fruits inside them. It is estimated that from the afternoon of December 16 until the morning of December 17, a lot more cherries will arrive on the market.

The sales of Zespri kiwis is also in a peak period right now. The Zespri gold kiwis, sold in packs of 3.3 kg, sell faster than the Zespri green kiwis. The price of the gold kiwis is also pretty stable, 190 RMB to 210 RMB, whereas green kiwis go for 80 RMB. In comparison, the sales of the Italian gold kiwis is a grim scene. Even though they are a lot cheaper than the Zespri kiwis, they absolutely don't sell with the same speed.

The sales speed of other varieties is average. The Red Globe grapes from Peru have sales problems. The wholesale markets with smart operations only sell one or two pallets every day at a low speed. The situation of the blueberries is the same as usual, both in terms of taste and of overall sales speed.
