Pedro Varela, TC Fruits:

The kiwi season in Spain and Portugal begins with higher production levels than last year

The kiwi season in northern Spain and Portugal is beginning on a larger scale and with higher yields than last year. Consumption has been steadily increasing each year.

We are currently wrapping up the kiwi season in the Southern Hemisphere and will soon shift our focus to the national product," stated Pedro Varela from TC Fruits' sales department. "We are one of the companies that have extended the Southern Hemisphere season the longest and are the only ones with a production exceeding 14 degrees Brix at the moment. We expect to start selling after the national kiwi surpasses 12 degrees Brix, which we forecast will happen this week."

"Our kiwis are required to meet strict standards for minimum sweetness, penetrometry, and dry matter to stand out in the market. This commitment led us to win the Flavour of the Year 2025 award in the kiwi category in Spain, with our Raíces brand," Varela highlighted.

This season, the kiwi planting area in Spain has increased by about 10%, leading to a much higher expected yield than last season. According to Varela, last season's production across Spain and other European countries, except Greece, decreased by 40-50%.

"We expect production will rebound after a historically low crop. However, it will still be 10% below the average of the previous five years. Additionally, increased production and the summer heatwaves are likely to result in generally smaller fruit sizes," the sales representative from TC Fruits added.

Although kiwi is more available, field prices remain higher than at the start of last season. "As a result, market prices are also elevated. We are coming off a period of high import prices, yet consumption has not declined. I don't believe we've hit the price ceiling yet, but I don't expect prices to increase significantly either," Varela stated.

"This indicates that demand for kiwi remains strong, with consumption increasing worldwide due to its recognized health benefits. It is forecasted that global production will expand by about 30% on average over the next five years. We had a successful year in kiwi sales, and it appears this positive trend will persist through the national season," he added.

Kiwi is one of TC Fruits' main products, alongside strawberries, bananas, grapes, citrus, and apples. The company supplies kiwi year-round, primarily from Galicia and Asturias in Spain and Portugal from November to June, with imports from Greece and Italy during periods of low local supply. During the Southern Hemisphere season, they source kiwi from Chile and Argentina.

"While we have traditionally focused on the domestic market, in recent years we've experienced steady growth in exports to Latin America, Asia, and Africa. There is a growing hunger for kiwi," he stated.
