“We’re testing pink-fleshed guava varieties for the European market”

India's guava exports are on an upward curve this season, with notable improvements in both volume and quality, says Swapna Jarag of Grow India Import Export based in Pune, Maharashtra. "The Allahabad Safeda and Taiwan Pink varieties continue to lead our exports and draw appreciation mainly for their firmness, unique aroma, and balanced flavor."

Jarag highlights a 10% rise in production across Maharashtra and Gujarat compared to last year. "Improved orchard management, and farmers' growing commitment to meeting export quality requirements have been instrumental in this rise." She adds, "Export volumes have followed suit, climbing approximately by 12%, due to strong demand from the UAE, Qatar, Oman, and new interest in European markets."

The sector also weathered challenges this season, including an early monsoon and unpredictable temperature swings. Jarag acknowledges, 'These conditions caused some crop loss, but by improving pre-cooling and moisture control systems, we were able to adapt and minimize the impact."

The main export season spans September to February, with Grow India focusing on sourcing fruit from fertile growing regions across Maharashtra and Gujarat, including Pune, Nashik, and Valsad. Jarag observes that pricing has gone up by 5 to 7%: "Higher pricing is due to enhanced grading, streamlined logistics, and packaging upgrades like mesh bags for better ventilation and reduced damage, together contributing to enhanced freshness from farm to shelf."

"The Middle East remains India's strongest market, with demand also growing in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, Poland, and Germany. Thailand and Egypt are strong competitors, but India stands out due to diverse seasons, flavors, and supply," Jarag notes.

Looking ahead, Grow India is preparing to trial new pink-fleshed varieties with smoother texture and better seed balance, tailored to European preferences for mild sweetness and ready-to-eat quality. Jarag concludes, "Expanding to Europe and Eastern Europe through select buyers valuing traceability and farmer engagement is our logical next step."
