The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy in Dominica has invited commercial citrus growers to participate in a new initiative aimed at expanding and developing citrus production across the island.
According to a statement from the ministry, the program is designed to assist farmers in strengthening their citrus operations through targeted support and access to planting materials and other resources. One Mile Agri-Station in Portsmouth has been designated as the main distribution site for the program.
Farmers interested in participating are required to ensure that their farms are prepared for planting. Readiness will be assessed by the designated Area Extension Officer. Once the farm is verified as suitable, participants will receive an official confirmation document. This confirmation must be presented to complete payment and finalize the purchase of planting materials or other inputs provided under the program.
The initiative offers a range of citrus varieties for commercial planting, including Persian Lime (Bears Lime), Mexican Lime, Jackson Grapefruit, Star Ruby Grapefruit, Olinda Valencia, Improved Meyer Lemon, Cara Cara Navel Orange, Australian Late Navel Orange, Nucellar Valencia Orange, Ortanique, and Tangerine.
The ministry stated that the program aims to "enhance citrus production in Dominica" by enabling farmers to expand existing orchards or establish new plantations.
