Peru begins direct air cargo flights for blueberries to the U.S.

DP World has completed its first series of dedicated air cargo charter flights from Peru to the United States, transporting over 400 tons of freshly harvested blueberries from Chiclayo and Trujillo to New York's JFK International Airport. The operation marks the company's entry into air freight logistics for perishable goods in Peru.

The four direct flights were conducted in partnership with two agricultural exporters, with each aircraft carrying around 100 tons of blueberries under cold chain conditions. The shipments were handled through temperature-controlled airport warehouses to maintain product integrity throughout transport.

The operation integrated cold chain management, freight forwarding, and cargo consolidation. Blueberries were moved from farms in northern Peru to air freight facilities in Lima before export. New York served as the distribution hub for the U.S. East Coast, providing direct access to supermarket and retail channels. The flights reduced the total transit time to under 12 hours between departure and arrival.

Peru's Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation projects that agricultural exports, including grapes, blueberries, and mangoes, could reach US$15 billion by the end of 2025, compared with about US$12.8 billion in 2024.

Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, said: "Our first perishable cargo charter flights in Peru mark a major step in strengthening logistics connectivity for the agro-export industry. By combining our expertise in maritime, road, and now air transport, we are helping position Peru as a global leader in the export of high-value fresh produce."

DP World has been expanding its multimodal logistics network in northern Peru, linking air transport with ground and port operations. The company operates facilities at the Port of Paita through a joint venture, which helps reduce logistical congestion during peak harvests and supports exporters with additional transport routes.

The expansion into air freight forms part of a regional strategy to enhance logistics efficiency across Latin America. The company said it aims to improve transport times and maintain cold chain integrity to support agricultural exports.

Recent infrastructure investments in Peru include the Bicentennial Pier expansion at the Port of Callao and capacity increases across DP World's Latin America terminals.

"As we expand into air logistics, our goal is to provide customers with the speed, reliability, and visibility needed to thrive in competitive global markets," Merino said.
