The South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) and Transnova Africa have received the Platinum Award at the 2025 GIBS Logistics Achiever Awards for their work in developing a prescriptive logistics model aimed at improving the management of South Africa's fresh produce exports.
The Logistics Achiever Awards recognise organisations that demonstrate excellence and measurable results in logistics and supply chain management through sustainable and effective practices. The Platinum Award is the programme's highest distinction and was presented to SATI and Transnova for their joint development of a model designed to improve export planning and coordination in one of South Africa's key agricultural sectors.

According to SATI CEO Mecia Petersen, "This milestone aligns with SATI's broader objective to maintain and promote South Africa's reputation as a reliable global supplier of consistent quality table grapes."
A data-driven approach to logistics
SATI commissioned Transnova Africa to develop the Prescriptive Logistics Model in April 2024, following disruptions at the Cape Town Container Terminal that led to extended export delays. The model, powered by digital twin technology, replicates South Africa's export logistics network to simulate real-world conditions, optimise container allocation, and identify more efficient routes to market.
During Phase 1, the model provided insights into constraints during the 2023/24 export season and highlighted strategies to mitigate logistical challenges. In Phase 2, it evolved into a tactical planning tool for the 2024/25 season, providing fortnightly recommendations and risk assessments to help exporters make informed decisions and align with shifting market conditions.
Petersen said, "By combining SATI's industry insights with Transnova's advanced supply chain expertise, we've created a model that not only mitigates risk but also enhances competitiveness and trust in South Africa's fresh produce exports."
Carsten Schubert, Chief Revenue Officer at Transnova Africa, added, "The Prescriptive Logistics Model shows how data, collaboration, and innovation can transform supply chains from reactive to predictive. This is more than a logistics tool — it's a new way of thinking that helps our agriculture sector become more resilient, efficient, and sustainable."
Broader application across the fruit industry
Following its use in the table grape industry, SATI and Transnova are working with other commodity groups, including citrus and stone fruit, to expand the model's application. The organisations are also collaborating with Transnet and the Western Cape Government to improve data sharing and enhance real-time logistics coordination across the country's perishable export network.
Petersen said, "Together, we are future-proofing South Africa's agricultural exports and ensuring our produce continues to reach the world, fresh, on time, every time."
