Tomato price not rising against the trend in September

In September, prices for loose round tomatoes in Spain were significantly lower than usual. The average price was €0.70 per kilo, which is 32% lower than last September and 24% below the five-year average.

According to the European Commission's Tomato Dashboard, tomato prices were also down in the Netherlands compared to the same period last year. Loose tomatoes fetched an average of €0.94 per kilo, about 5% less than last year, while truss tomatoes sold for around €1.09 per kilo, a 6% drop compared to September 2024.

Across the European Union, the average tomato price stood at €1.50 per kilo, which is roughly in line with the five-year average. What's unusual this season is that, unlike in previous years, tomato prices didn't rise in September, a noticeable break from the typical market trend.
