High demand, but challenging logistics during Egyptian garlic season

The Egyptian garlic season is coming to a close soon, and it's been a good season, with better availability than last season, says Amro Yassin of Egyptian produce exporter Stars of Export: "For Egyptian green garlic, the start was very good overall. Demand was high in the market, but due to sea freight conditions and problems, the season ended up being a short one, definitely not as long as it was last year. For fresh dry garlic, the start was a little late, but the available quantities are nearly double compared to the volumes we had last year."

Yassin is very thankful for the fact that they've been able to focus on new markets this season, while also maintaining their relations with their major clients in established markets. "Our major exports in Europe specifically are directed towards Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, among other countries. However, we also export our garlic to Australia, Canada, Brazil, the US, South Africa, and Taiwan, as well as some newer markets that have begun to take an interest in Egyptian produce. Overall, export volumes are higher than in previous years."

And so, Stars of Export will also focus on reaching new markets in the next season: "The biggest challenges we have faced are sea freight problems, the chaos caused by vessel delays, and also climate change. Our pre-season goals were to increase export volumes to several countries and open new markets, and these goals have been achieved. As for the investment plans for the next season, we're trying to increase the exported quantities, open new markets, and develop and use newer methods in packaging," Yassin concludes.
