In the 2023/24 season, Australian avocado production reached 150,913 tonnes, with Central New South Wales (CNSW) contributing approximately 4% of the total, around 5,562 tonnes. Despite a consistent year-round supply, growers in CNSW have faced significant challenges in 2024 due to severe weather events that have affected some orchards.
In response, Avocados Australia and the National Avocado Extension Project team have organised the Central NSW Avocado Grower Regional Forum, scheduled for Thursday, 3 July, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at the Stuarts Point Community Hall (2A Ocean Avenue, Stuarts Point). The event will include an afternoon orchard walk. CNSW avocado growers, their orchard staff, and packing personnel are encouraged to attend. Participation is free.
The forum's technical theme is yield variability, a key concern for growers in the region. The event will feature presentations from several industry and research professionals. Dr Harley Smith (CSIRO) will discuss flowering and fruit set, Dr Everard Edwards (CSIRO) will cover carbohydrate dynamics, and Dr John Wilkie (Wilkie Horticulture) will address factors influencing yield variability and light interception.
A representative from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will also be present to provide guidance on accessing disaster recovery assistance and related support services.
According to Bridie Carr, Senior Extension Horticulturist with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, the technical content of the forum has been shaped with input from CNSW growers through the regional lead, Isabella Ellmers.
Ian Tolson, CNSW Director for Avocados Australia, will attend the forum and engage with growers on local concerns and priorities. John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia, is also scheduled to present an industry update.
The forum is part of the Avocado Industry Development and Extension Project (AV23010), funded by Hort Innovation, and aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and technical exchange among industry members.
