Dominican Republic trials temperate fruit crops

The initiation of fruit plant varieties trial occurred at La Culata, Constanza's experimental farm, incorporating macadamia, peach, strawberry, raspberry, persimmon, apple, blueberry, among others. These varieties are under adaptation to the Dominican tropical climate and soil through micropropagation facilitated by the Biovega laboratory. The objective is to diversify and extend national fruit production, integrating innovation into crops adjusted for high-altitude regions.

Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz spearheaded the launch, indicating the pilot project's goal to assess agronomic efficiency, climate resilience, and commercial viability of various temperate and subtropical species. This initiative aims to transform local production into new plantations, enabling potential exports of new domestically produced varieties.

Key participants included fruit specialists, agricultural sector representatives, and local producers, along with Deputy Minister of Production and Marketing, Eulalio Ramírez; Miriam Guzmán from Rural Development; Rafael Ortiz Quezada concerning Scientific and Technological Affairs; and Pablo de Moya, North Central Regional Minister. Others present were Ernesto Peña Nina, Constanza's regional agricultural manager; Carlos Viloria, Biovega's director; and Humberto Collado, president of Unaproda.

The event featured a tasting session of several exotic fruits on promotion within the region.
