Spain's green asparagus harvest is well underway

The green asparagus harvest season in Granada and Spain is well underway. Cooperatives and agricultural entities in at least eight provinces, including Granada, are operating at full capacity, and Spanish green asparagus is reaching the national and international markets.

Granada expects to harvest 35 million kilos, 10 to 15% more than in the previous year. The province strengthens its position as the national and European leading producer of green asparagus, with 6,500 hectares that account for more than 65% of the total area devoted to this crop in Spain and around 60% of the national production.

"This is the ideal time to consume asparagus grown in Spain," emphasized Antonio Zamora, president of Spain's Green Asparagus Inter-branch organization.

Spain's Green Asparagus Inter-branch organization groups 96% of the national production and 90% of sales. Its role is essential in channelling the sector's demands, fostering synergies, and optimizing marketing, promoting a balance in the value chain.

This organization includes the Association of Cooperatives of Granada, Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de Andalucía-Granada, UPA, Coag, Asaja, the Association of Green Asparagus of Guadalajara, Aproa, Asociafruit, ES Andalucía, and the Regulatory Council of the Asparagus of Huétor Tájar Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

This structure involves farmers, production and marketing companies, many of which are cooperatives, distributed in the Andalusian provinces of Granada, Malaga, Seville, Cadiz, Jaen, and Cordoba, as well as in Castile-La Mancha, mainly in Guadalajara, and in Extremadura.
