Shippers consider trade policy changes as top supply chain risk in 2025

Global logistics provider C.H. Robinson, which manages 37 million shipments annually, has released a new customer research study highlighting the impact of shifting tariffs and trade policies on global supply chains. According to the study, changes in trade regulations are expected to be one of the most significant challenges for businesses in 2025.

The survey found that nearly half of respondents identified uncertainty around tariffs and trade policy as a key concern. Many shippers reported taking proactive steps to address potential disruptions, including analyzing customs data, identifying alternative suppliers, and re-evaluating cross-border strategies.

Industry response to trade policy uncertainty
In response to these challenges, shippers are developing contingency plans and exploring tariff mitigation strategies. Common approaches include sourcing materials from alternative locations, conducting risk assessments, and reducing reliance on imports from specific regions, particularly China.

C.H. Robinson has been assisting customers in adapting to policy changes by running risk assessments, developing contingency strategies, and providing supply chain diversification solutions. The company also publishes regular freight market insights and plans to host a webinar on February 11 to discuss trade policy developments.

The role of supply chain visibility
Industry experts emphasize the growing importance of real-time data in managing supply chain risks. Jordan Kass, president of C.H. Robinson Managed Solutions, stated that visibility into supply chain operations has become essential for making informed decisions. He noted that companies without access to comprehensive data and analytics may struggle to adapt to policy shifts and external disruptions.

Mike Short, president of C.H. Robinson Global Forwarding, highlighted the role of supply chain diversification in reducing vulnerability to regulatory and logistical uncertainties. He stated that businesses able to adjust sourcing strategies and access up-to-date information will be better positioned to navigate trade policy changes.

As global trade dynamics continue to evolve, businesses are focusing on flexibility and data-driven decision-making to manage uncertainty in the supply chain.
