More sweet potatoes will be on the way from Brazil to Europe soon

More sweet potatoes will be on the way from Brazil to Europe from next month to meet the growing winter demand. This comes after rains in Brazil at the end of last year impacted harvesting and led to lower exports. Cassiano Berol, from the Brazilian exporter Agricola Plantar, says, "Demand is stable, and in winter Europe buys more sweet potatoes. We are organizing more loadings for February as November and December were rainier."

He says when Brazil has heavy rains growers change their focus a bit. "It becomes difficult to enter the fields, tractors get stuck, etc. Under the rains, we cannot harvest the crops so effectively. Not to mention that growers prefer to plant new crops in the rainy periods, and not harvest them."

Berol says they load sweet potatoes from Brazil weekly. "We are loading weekly all year round. The cost currently is around $10,70 - $11 10 kg FOB."

He says logistically Brazil is a good option because they usually have only 18 days of transit time to Europe and the USA (when it goes to Canada). There is also no need to navigate on the Pacific Ocean waters via the Panama Canal or through other conflict areas. However, lately, the shipments to the United Kingdom (UK) have been substantially delayed. It now takes twice as long for shipments from Brazil to reach the UK. "We are suffering to send it to London Gateway as they face congestion due to the bad weather. Vessels that usually had 18 days to get there from Santos Brazil, now are facing delays of approximately 30 days," concludes Berol.
