Agristo plans $450 million potato processing facility in North Dakota

Since its founding in 1986, Agristo has supplied customers across Europe and other markets. To meet increasing demand in European markets and strengthen its export position, the company has invested in expanding production facilities in Belgium (Wielsbeke) and France (Escaudoeuvres).

The European market for frozen potato products has experienced steady growth, prompting the need for increased production capacity. Due to the high consumption volumes in Europe, even modest market growth necessitates significant investments in production expansion.

Similar growth patterns are evident in North America, where demand for frozen potato products is rising faster than in Europe, and consumption volumes are higher. Agristo's selection of production locations is primarily based on the availability of raw materials, such as potatoes, and the presence of a sufficient market scale for its private label segment.

In response to growing demand and the availability of resources, Agristo has announced plans to establish its first production facility in the United States. Following years of potato trials across various U.S. states, the company has selected Grand Forks, North Dakota, as the location for the facility. The region was chosen for its high-quality potato farming and potential for logistical connections to U.S.-based clients.

Agristo is preparing to invest up to USD 450 million in the facility, which is expected to generate 300 to 350 direct jobs in North Dakota. The project is also anticipated to lead to indirect investments in agriculture and the supply chain, potentially benefiting local and regional economies.

The company is currently working with local authorities to secure an industrial site and finalize logistical plans. Negotiations for the construction of the facility are ongoing, with an expected conclusion by mid-2025.
