Argentina consolidates its position as a cherry-exporting powerhouse in Latin America

Argentina has already exported more than 6,000 tons of cherries this season

Argentina reaffirms its leading position in the production and export of cherries, with five provinces producing cherries: Mendoza, Río Negro, Neuquén, Chubut, and Santa Cruz. During the 2023-24 season, Argentina exported 7,192 tons of cherries, making it Latin America's second-largest cherry exporter, according to data from Más Producción.

According to data from the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA), the country has already exported 6,099 tons of cherries in the 2024-25 campaign, i.e. 34% more than in the same period of the previous season. With three months still left in the season and a promising harvest in terms of quality and quantity, Argentina is expected to beat its own export record.

"We are very pleased with the quality of the fruit and the weather conditions that have accompanied us. We believe that the exportable balances will continue to grow throughout the season," stated Aníbal Caminiti, manager of the Argentinean Chamber of Integrated Cherry Producers (CAPCI).

China remains the largest market for Argentinean cherries, accounting for 39% of shipments in the current season. This season, the Asian giant has received 2,358 tons, a 38% year-on-year growth, starting in October with the first shipments coming from the Middle Valley of Rio Negro.

The US ranks second with 1,824 tons, i.e. 36% more over the same period in 2023. Spain ranked third with 629 tons (+30%).

China and the United States account for nearly 70% of Argentine cherry exports, marking an upward trend compared to other markets. Meanwhile, exports to the United Arab Emirates experienced a 30% year-on-year decline.

Another relevant fact is the increase in air transport as a means of export. In the last quarter of 2023, it accounted for 77% of total shipments, rising to 85% in 2024. This change responds to the greater volume of early fruit and the need to place it quickly in strategic markets, where prices are higher in the first commercial windows.
