Peruvian avocado exports decreased in August

In July 2024, Peru's avocado exports experienced growth driven by good prices. In August, however, the 24% increase in avocado prices wasn't enough to offset the 23% drop in the volume shipped, which stood at 63,337 tons. Despite still having good prices, the value of exports totaled $133.8 million, (-4%) and the average price stood at $2.11 per kilogram.
Peruvian shipped its avocado to 22 destinations in August, the same number as one year ago. The Netherlands continued to be the main destination with 21,945 tons and a 10% decrease in volume. However, the value of exports to this destination grew by 16%, reaching $47.5 million, thanks to a 29% increase in the average price, which stood at $2.16 per kilogram. This situation allowed the Dutch to increase their share in Peruvian avocado exports from 29.3% to 35.5%.</p>
Spain was the second-biggest destination with 17,434 tons, a very similar volume to the previous year, but with a significantly higher value of $38.1 million (+24%). The average price in this market increased by 23% to $2.19 per kilogram, which increased its share of Peruvian exports from 22.0% to 28.5%.
Exports to the United Kingdom decreased by 9% and stood at 7,554 tons shipped. Despite this fall, the export value to this destination increased by 2%, reaching $15.2 million. The average price paid by the UK increased by 13%, going from $1.78 to US$2.01 per kilogram, and its share went from 10.6% to 11.4%.
Shipments to the United States fell by 68%. The decrease in exports to this market, which previously accounted for 22% of Peru's total exports and competed for second place with Spain, had a notable impact on the global performance of Peruvian avocado exports.
