The start of domestic cargo services from the newly-established cargo terminal at the Pune airport this year has earned appreciation for making some positive strides in local logistics. However, international cargo services have been inactive for the past nine months due to technical issues. The primary cause of the delay has been attributed to an incomplete broadband (LIS line) connection that links the computers within the cargo terminal project. Consequently, the Customs Department has withheld approval for the international cargo service at Pune airport.
While domestic cargo services have garnered a positive response, the international counterpart is yet to start operations. That is why local businesses are struggling to fetch competitive market prices for their goods in the absence of international connectivity. The current situation leaves small producers, farmers and traders with no option but to send their goods via Mumbai airport. Unfortunately, this alternative comes at a higher cost making it difficult for several of them to carry out export.
