The 2023-2024 Spanish lemon season is starting now. On the supply side, Ailimpo and the Ministry of Agriculture expect the Fino lemon production to increase by around 30% and reach approximately 1 million tons; a similar volume to that of the 2020/2021 campaign.
"The early start of the harvest due to the early end of the overseas campaign and the lack of good calibers for now in Spain has put prices under extraordinary tension," says Ailimpo in its first report. "The situation will logically change as the fruit reaches the right commercial size and the supply and demand recover their balance."
"Regarding the demand, we are facing a scenario of great uncertainty, given the economic situation in Europe, marked by high inflation, which is taking a toll on the purchasing power of consumers. This is a concern that affects all products, although it will be necessary to wait a few weeks to know the extent to which each individual category will be affected, and how the consumption of conventional and organic lemons will be affected," said the interprofessional organization.
"As regards the competition from Turkish lemons, their export campaign has already started with good caliber fruit at a competitive price; therefore, given the expected harvest volume in Spain, it is in our best interest to give dynamism to the harvest, with prices adapted to market demand, and thus avoid the accumulation of fruit in the coming months," said Ailimpo.
"As far as grapefruit is concerned, the end of the South African campaign is allowing Mediterranean grapefruit to arrive to an empty market," they say. Spanish exporters are waiting to see how Turkey and Israel will do, both in terms of volume and prices.
