According to the statistics agency, in August 2023, food products, on average, became 0.6% more expensive compared to July. Apples saw a price increase of 10.9%, while nuts rose by 8.5%.
On the other hand, the prices of onions (down by 28.9%), cauliflower (down by 26.4%), fresh tomatoes (down by 13.2%), beets (down by 13%), and carrots (down by 12.2%) decreased.
Across the country, oranges are becoming more expensive at a rate exceeding 20% compared to the previous month for the second month. As noted by RBK, since 2002, when Rosstat began openly publishing price statistics, there has never been such a two-month jump in the average cost of oranges in Russia. The publication notes that by the end of August 2023, the price of oranges had increased by 71% compared to the same month of the previous year.
The Central Bank of Russia had previously reported that due to the weakening of the Russian ruble, there had been an increase in the cost of importing fruits and vegetables. This led to a rapid rise in the price of fruits and citrus fruits.
