"La Quercia Kiwi Plants"

Lively orders for kiwifruit plants

Orders for kiwifruit plants to be transplanted in the fall are coming in at La Quercia, which is currently carrying out grafts for club golden kiwifruits as well as growing "free sale" plants such as Hayward.

Growing kiwifruit plants

"We produce over 200 thousand plants a year, which makes us a small-medium business that focuses on the high-quality of its vegetable material. Quality means uniformity, a well-formed root system and a harmonic development of plants. We operate on the European market as well as on the domestic one, with a good growth in France and Spain," explains Denis Magalotti.

Growing kiwifruit plants requires a lot of specialized labor, which is difficult to find. Over the past few weeks, an internationally-renowned grafter - Alessio Iorio - has been at work at La Quercia. "I've been doing this work for over 10 years and I move around the Campania, Basilicata and Lazio regions depending on the requests."

Iorio is carrying out English double notch grafting. "It takes a lot of patience, a steady hand, precision and calm. It is not something you can improvise. I am doing around one thousand grafts a day, then we use biodegradable material to tie the grafts to leave no residues."

Magalotti explains that "working with professionals such as Iorio leads to top-level results. In greenhouses, we perform biological control with useful insects and localized irrigation so as to only provide the nutrition and water actually needed by the plants."

Graft tied with biodegradable material

La Quercia covers 10 hectares in total, 6 of which destined to the nursery to be able to rotate. "Our entire nursery is protected by greenhouses, so the vegetable material is protected from the rain and hail throughout all phases, which in turn helps prevent diseases."
