Bumper garlic yield and high prices in Rangpur

A bumper production of garlic with all-time high market prices of the commodity have made farmers quite happy in the Rangpur agricultural region. According to officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension, a target of producing 29,555 tons of garlic was fixed from 3,645 hectares of land for all five districts in the region during the last Rabi season. However, farmers cultivated garlic on 3,366 hectares of land.

"After completing harvest recently, farmers got a bumper production of 27,737 tons of garlic at the average yield rate of 8.24 tons per hectare of land," said Additional Director of DAE for Rangpur  region Agriculturist Md Aftab Hossain.

A vegetable trader at Keranipara Kitchen Market in Rangpur city said that locally produced garlic sells at rates between Tk 5,600 and 5,800 per 40 kgs, to wholesalers.
