Prices for exotic mushrooms has also dropped accordingly

Demand for exotic mushrooms on a downward trend since March

There is a lot of uncertainty in the international exotic mushroom market, as demand has been dropping for months, says Nature Green’s project manager Peter Sutherland: “There seems to be quite a bit of disruption in the mushroom market. Demand has been on a downward trend since March and prices have fallen accordingly. Supermarkets have reduced their orders as a consequence of inflation, which hit consumption in every premium category. As you would expect, the exotic mushroom category has been no exception.”

However, it's not just the exotic mushroom market that’s taken a hit. According to Sutherland, the organic market in general has seen a decline in the demand for its products. “On top of that, demand for organic products has plummeted for the first time in the last twenty years as well. As we stated previously, Germany is the biggest organic market in Europe, and this market is not an exception when it comes to the demand being on the decline. The gastronomy market is also underperforming Year-on-Year, adding pressure on prices.”

To counter the lower demand, mushroom traders are trying to find the cheapest product for consumers, which in turn leaves a lot of the more expensive mushrooms untouched: “Basically, all market players are struggling to find cheaper products to cope with the ongoing demand. As a result, we are noticing a sort of mushroom oversupply within the market. We are actively seeking to open new doors on the retail front to try and mitigate some of the issues with wholesale market at the moment,” Sutherland concludes.
