Peruvian papaya exports fell by more than a half in the first quarter of 2023

In the first quarter of 2023, Peruvian papaya exports decreased by 64% in volume and 57% in value over the same period of the previous year, with shipments totaling 45.3 tons for 165,000 dollars, with an international average price of 3.65 dollars per kilogram, which was 19% higher than last year. According to Fresh Fruit, “This drop in dispatches is due to environmental and social complications at the national level.”

Frozen papaya was the most demanded, accumulating 45.2 tons valued at 164,000 dollars, accounting for practically all of the volume and value of the product exported. This group includes chopped and frozen papaya cubes. Only 168 kilograms of fresh papaya and papaya pulp were exported. The different papaya presentations were exported to only five countries. Chile was the main buyer with 44 tons of frozen papaya worth $161,000. The country shipped less than one ton to Guadeloupe, Switzerland, Uruguay, and Italy.
