The opinion of Francesco Perego, sales manager at New Factor

Dried fruit recovering after a bad 2022

"After a very complex 2022 when it comes to both volumes and production costs, made worse by the high temperatures in the fall that did not favor consumption, the first trimester of 2023 started positively for dried fruit, mainly thanks to the big retail chains," reports Francesco Perego, sales manager at New Factor.

"The other channels are suffering more, especially traditional ones (wholesalers /MOFs). Margins still have not gone back to satisfactory levels due to the "perfect storm" that occurred in 2022 and the costs the industry has had to face."

New Factor is a leading partner of the Noci di Romagna project, started over 20 years ago thanks to Alessandro Annibali. "As for the Noci di Romagna project, modern distributors have been interested in the first months of 2023, although volumes are somewhat lower due to a drop in consumption, but mainly due to the considerable difference in price with the produce from overseas, where prices are much lower."

As for the average sales prices of the Italian produce, they are slightly dropping compared with the previous campaign, also considering the circumstances described above but mostly due to the need to increase promotions.

"Having said this, it is important to stress the constant and growing interest of the big distribution chain for the development of Private Label projects that guarantee continuous supplies throughout the year. These elements confirm that the road chosen by New Factor and the other producers part of the project is the right one."

In 2023, New Factor "will continue growing by focusing on characterizing products such as Noci di Romagna and healthy or aperitif snacks, which include the Snack Time line launched in February. They will be showcased in preview at Macfrut (hall D5 - stand 1) and include a packaging type dedicated entirely to on-the-go consumption."
