Brazilian onion supply affects international purchases

Last week, the city of Porto Xavier, in the southern border state of Rio Grande do Sul, saw a drop in Argentine onion prices. According to sources at Hortifruti/Cepea, the imported goods face difficulties entering the Brazilian market due to the large volume of onions available in Brazil.

The price of Argentine type 3 onions at the border was R$ 43.17 per 20kg bag, slightly below the prices in Santa Catarina. Still, with shipping costs factored in, the Argentine product has equal or higher prices than domestic onions.
