Peru’s blueberry exports to China, its third biggest market, have increased by 38% in the 2022/2023 season compared to the last 2021/2022 season. “China is very close to exceeding 37 thousand tons, by the end of its campaign, shipments to China accumulated 36,973 tons, representing 13% of total exports,” says Luis Miguel Vegas, manager of the Association of Blueberries Producers of Peru (Proarándanos).
He says not only is China the third most important market for Peruvian blueberries that would have grown by 38% compared to 2021-2022. China also pays more than Peru’s largest markets namely the US and second largest market in European. Both top markets paid about $4.80 per kg while China paid $5.97 per kg for Peruvian blueberries. Due to the increase in volumes this season, average prices per kg decreased from last season’s $6.38 per kg.

The Peruvian blueberry campaign for 2022/2023 is largely finished. The riots in Peru during the strong harvesting and export period in December 2022 and January this year caused some delays and losses, which means export figures could have been even slightly higher for the world leaders in blueberry production and exports.
Proarándanos: Peak volumes sent to China in 2022-23 season
“Regarding the monthly curve of exports to this destination, shipments were concentrated in the months of September and October, months where 46% of the total sent to date was exported. However, China had an important participation for the months of May – August (32%), because its campaign started earlier than the rest of the main destinations,” states Miguel Vegas.
