Behr AG starts this year's open ground season with a slight delay

By mid-April, the first domestic open ground produce from southern Hesse should be available

The first sets of vegetable plants are in the ground. At the BEHR farm in southern Hesse, planting of iceberg lettuce began at the end of February. The Gresse site in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania started on February 28. Here, iceberg and mini romaine seedlings were also planted. Frisée lettuce, spinach and cauliflower and broccoli were also planted, in early to mid-March.

At the fields in Seevetal-Ohlendorf, planting did not start until March 16 due to the spontaneous onset of winter, which upset the schedule a bit, according to Lars Karnop, operations manager at the Lower Saxony site. Harvest is expected in the first week of May, depending on the weather and the crop, and in Büttelborn as early as mid-April.

Less produce from Spanish cultivation
At the moment, the conventional and organic open ground vegetables come from the company's own farm in southern Spain. This location in the south means that customers are supplied with fresh vegetables all year round, even in the winter months. Due to the frost in Spain in recent weeks, however, with less goods than planned. In December and January, there was a surplus of vegetables, but now there is a slight shortage.

In spring, the Hessian company ensures a smooth seasonal transition between the Spanish and German harvests. As a result, consumers can get fresh BEHR vegetables in grocery stores all year round.
