“Demand for Shiitake mushrooms dipped by the end of February”

Against expectations, demand for shiitake mushrooms from Ukraine seems to have dropped a bit as February came to an end, says Nature Green’s consultant and advisor Peter Sutherland: “In a surprising manner, the demand for shiitake mushrooms started dropping around the end of February. Before that point demand had been rather strong. However, when looking at overall volumes of shiitake compared to previous years, there has actually been more volumes exported this season.”

Getting products out of Ukraine is not really a problem at the moment, Sutherland explains. Costs are also no longer increasing for the transport to European markets. “When looking at the logistics, the situation and costs are progressively stabilizing. We don’t expect prices to increase any further at this point. Despite all the challenges, we’re confident in saying that deliveries from Ukraine to the EU have been steady and stable every week.”

Although demand dipped earlier this year, Sutherland feels that the shiitake trade will be on a normal level by the time Easter gets here. What happens next, he’s unsure of: “Looking forward, we expect the trade for shiitake mushrooms to be at a normal level during Easter, and prices will not be increasing. We can’t look ahead much further than that, as there is still a high level of uncertainty. Therefore, we can’t really predict what the situation will be during the summer months,” Sutherland concludes.
