Christian Cuvellier, Oliver:

The sales of Peruvian mangoes remain fluid despite the economic context

The season of the Peruvian mangoes is in full swing. Oliver, a major importer of exotic fruit and vegetables located on the Rungis market, also sells Peruvian mangoes. “We are now at the peak of the season which starts in November and ends in May. This is really the best-selling origin for mangoes, the one that is the most appreciated by customers. We have a regularity of supply over 6 months and a quality superior to what we can find anywhere else. That is why we try to make the season last as long as possible,” explains Christian Cuvellier, sales manager at Oliver.

Regarding consumption, there is a general decline for all exotic products. “These are products that have relatively high prices, so the market inevitably suffers a little from the current inflation and the consumers’ consumption choices. This is especially true now that mango prices are very high, beyond 6 euros/kg [6.48 USD/kg]. In times of inflation, these prices are acceptable for the more well-off households, but things are more complicated for average consumers. We also feel that choosing local products is an increasingly important criterion for French consumers. Although not very obvious, this trend has been pushing consumers to make different choices, at the expense of exotic products.”

Despite this small decrease in consumption due to the current economic situation, the Peruvian mango campaign is going rather well for Oliver. “Sales remain fluid and the demand for the Peruvian origin is still good.”
