The strawberry sector in Egypt is suffering disruptions due to unfavorable weather conditions, according to Mohammed Ezzat, CEO of the producer Green Nile.
Ezzat explains: "The season started with a cold snap that affected the Ismailia region in particular, and damaged the strawberry crops. Later on, the weather conditions worsened in the entire country."
"While the weather conditions are good for several crops in Egypt, they are not favorable to strawberries currently. Sudden changes in temperature over a short lapse of time, whether becoming too high or too low, cause the roots of the plants to rot," he adds.
According to Ezzat, nothing is lost yet: "It is possible to overcome this problem by treating the roots and nurturing the soil, in order to improve the plants' resistance, while waiting for milder and more stable temperatures. We will soon see how it goes".
Growers have significantly increased their acreage, with the national average reaching 20% more than last season, according to Ezzat. "This will help keep volumes more or less stable despite the weather-related diseases."
For the same reasons, "prices are currently high and there is no sign of a return to normal prices by the end of the season," adds Ezzat.
As for demand, "It is currently high and comes mainly from European countries, China, Russia and the United States. But given the problems that the industry is experiencing this year, we are forced to give priority to our old clients and select our destinations."
"At Green Nile, we have sufficient volumes in the varieties, sizes, and qualities demanded by our markets, and we will be able to meet our commitments to our customers this year despite the difficult conditions," concludes Ezzat.
