Europe's unique trials in food 'social security'
As food prices rise around the world and access to healthy nutrition falls, trials in France and Belgium are experimenting with a unique "social security" for food. On a crisp winter morning in Schaerbeek, a vibrant neighbourhood in north-east Brussels, Marie-Christine Hache walks the aisles of BEES Coop supermarket filling her cart with organic fruit, vegetables, nuts, rice, pulses and pasta. For Hache, the burden of grocery shopping amidst record-high prices has been eased through her participation in one of two novel initiatives trialling "social security for food".

Lidl and Bioland, one of the largest organic-food associations in Germany, have announced the expansion of their partnership which first began in 2018. Within the first three years, Lidl was able to more than double the range of Bioland products.

Israeli retailer Shufersal reports lower Q4 profit
Shufersal, Israel's largest supermarket chain, reported a steep drop in fourth-quarter profit, citing a decrease in operating income and one-off expenses. Shufersal said it earned 3mln shekels ($822,413) in the October-December period, versus 100mln shekels a year earlier. Revenue rose 1% to 3.65bln shekels, although same store sales dipped 1.6% versus the year earlier quarter.

India: Anant Goel’s Sorted scoops up over $5mln in ongoing seed round
Fresh farm produce and supply chain startup Sorted has raised over $5mln in its ongoing seed funding. This is the maiden funding round for a year old venture. Sorted allows offline mom and pop stores to place orders for fresh produce of fruits and vegetables through its app, and have it delivered the next morning straight from farmers.

Just Eat plans to oust 1,700 couriers in the UK
Just Eat is planning to oust 1,700 couriers in the UK as the takeaway delivery firm shifts back towards a gig economy model and scraps guaranteed minimum pay, sick pay and holiday pay. In addition 170 head office staff will have their contracts terminated as the firm attempts to cut costs in a highly competitive market.

Dutch ecommerce worth €33.3bln in 2022
Last year, Dutch consumers spent 33.3bln euros online. This is a 9% growth compared to 2021. The number of purchases actually decreased by 5%, but the average amount per purchase increased by 15%. This is evident from the latest Thuiswinkel Market Monitor from Dutch ecommerce association

Italian large-scale retail sector sees sales up, margins decline in 2022
The large-scale food retail sector reported 6.7% sales growth in Italy in 2022, albeit with EBIT margin declining to 1.4% from 2.4% in the previous year, new data has shown. The figures come from the annual Observatory on the Italian retail sector conducted by Mediobanca, which compiled data from 130 companies, accounting for 97.6% of the market.

US: Giant Eagle parts ways with CEO of past 11 years
Giant Eagle is separating from its CEO of 11 years. The company announced that the board decided to separate Laura Karet pursuant to her contract. Bill Artman was appointed as the company's interim CEO, effective immediately.

US: Harris Teeter revamps its marketing approach
Earlier this month, the Southeastern grocer introduced a new logo, tagline and marketing campaign built around the theme “In food with love” in an effort to focus attention on the retailer’s identity as a fresh food supplier while paying homage to the classic look and feel it has spent years promoting. The supermarket operator, which has been owned by Kroger since 2014, also rolled out a modernized version of the loaf of bread, fish and apple illustration it has long promoted.

Canada: Fortinos produce director Sergio Mazzuca passes away
Sergio Mazzuca, Fortinos’ senior director of produce, floral and bulk, passed away March 18 from cancer. “We offer our sincere condolences to his immediate family and extended family”, the company stated. “Sergio will be profoundly missed by his Fortinos family, we will miss his laughter, sense of humor, loyalty, friendship, and devotion to his colleagues and the business”.

US: Kroger Delivery arrives in Denver Metro Area
The Kroger Co., America's grocer, announced its Customer Fulfillment Center (CFC) in Aurora, Colorado is open. This facility expands access to fresh, affordable food and provides more than 200 new associates with opportunities to grow their careers. Customers across the region can order Kroger's fresh produce and trend-setting Our Brands products to be delivered directly to their doors by a friendly associate.
