Spaniards spend an average of 60 euro a year on organic products

According to Ecovalia's annual report on organic production and consumption of organic products in Spain, the area devoted to organic production and the consumption of organic products continue to grow in Spain.

The total market for organic products in Spain in 2022 reached 2,856 million euro, 2,532 of which correspond to household consumption. The average total expenditure per capita stood at 60 euro per person per year, 53.20 of which correspond to household purchases.

During 2022, 64% of Spain's organic basket consisted of products of plant origin, mainly fruit (14%) and vegetables (10%), and 36% of products of animal origin, mainly meat (27%).

The average price of organic products stood at € 3.90/kg in 2022. The average price of organic plant products was € 2.47/kg and the average price of products derived from organic animals was € 6.64/kg.

The average price variation of organic products in Spain was 7.32%, a percentage that increased to 8.70% in non-organic products.

Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Catalonia, the regions with the most area devoted to organic production
According to surface data, Spain has 2,635,442 hectares devoted to organic production, registering a 26.6% growth in recent years. Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Catalonia maintain their leading positions at the national level.

Spain's Useful Agricultural Area is at 10.8%, exceeding the European average which is 9.63%.

The main crops are nuts, with 262,280 hectares; olive groves, with 256,507 hectares; cereals, with 241,913 hectares; and vineyards, with 142,176 hectares. However, at the percentage level, the four crops that have grown the most are nuts (33%); bananas and subtropics (23%); citrus (21%), and olive groves (15%).

Spain has a total of 62,320 ecological activities, a category that has registered a 41.7% increase in the last five years.
