VBT figures week 11

Tomato price back to 2022 levels, strawberry price drops below five-year average

The tomato price fell a little further last week, bringing the week 11 median prices at VBT to 2022 levels. The average prices for cucumber and sweet pepper are still above that.

Tomato prices are also still high at the Verbond van Belgische Tuinbouwcoöperaties, with an average of 2.57 euros for a kilo of vine tomatoes and 2.40 for a kilo of loose tomatoes. Prices last week were still well above the five-year average. The same goes for costs, but even more than for prices, those costs are different for each grower, depending on gas contracts, for example.

The average unit price for cucumber came to 54 euro cents last week. The median price for organic cucumbers is also falling. The unit price here in week 11 came out at rounded 84 euro cents.

Most pepper greenhouses are still producing green peppers. The average price here dropped from 2.10 euros in week 10 to 1.99 euros in week 11.

Other crops from the greenhouse include greenhouse cauliflowers (good for just over 1 euro each), cabbage lettuce (63 euro cents each), and all kinds of lettuce. The median price for greenhouse cauliflower, head lettuce, and also lollo rossa dropped last week. For green and red oak leaf lettuce and lollo bionda, the median price rose.

A market update from advocacy group Boerenbond (available to members behind a login) speaks of 'too low' prices for greenhouse asparagus. Last week the middle price did climb slightly, but in view of increased costs, the price difference with the five-year average is limited.

The average price for strawberries has fallen fast in recent weeks, even dropping below the five-year average last week.
